The inter- and intraspecific patterns of morphological differentiation have been evaluated, using a Fourier analysis of the mandible outline. Two congeneric species of Japanese field mice, Apodemus speciosus and Apodemus argenteus, differ considerably in their feeding strategies and habitat utilizations. Although both species are omnivorous, previous studies demonstrated that A. argenteus typically eats a wide variety of food items than A. speciosus. Apodemus Division. Diagnosed by Niethammer (1978d) using skeletal and soft tissues, body size, and A. argenteus as the sole member of the third group.
